The large end of the Chau range, supplied with the stand built to carry it. A hand-hammered Wuhan Chau gong from 28" to 36", the heavier-gauge Wuhan WU322A floor stand, and a mallet.

At these diameters the Chau stops being an accent and becomes the instrument in the room. The fundamental drops well below anything a smaller gong can produce, and the wash after a full strike keeps unfolding for the better part of a minute. Each gong starts as a bronze casting and is hand-hammered out to its finished diameter in Wuhan, China.

Choosing a size

  • 28" and 30" — the entry to the large range. Deep and powerful, still liftable by one person.
  • 32" and 34" — concert and installation territory. Long decay, complex overtone structure.
  • 36" — the largest that fits this stand comfortably. Enormous fundamental, exceptional sustain.

These are heavy instruments. Allow floor space and expect freight shipping on the larger sizes.
