The Wuhan Chau gong — also called a tam-tam — is the sound most people picture when they think of a gong. A soft mallet draws out a deep, slow bloom of overtones; a firm strike opens into a full, thunderous crash that fills a hall. The larger the gong, the darker and more complex the wash.
Each gong starts as a small bronze casting and is hand-hammered out to its finished diameter, a process still done by hand in Wuhan, China. Wuhan Chau gongs are a first choice of the world's leading symphonies, and they are equally at home in sound healing, meditation, theatre, and film scoring.
Choosing a size
- 3.6" to 16" — bright and quick. Desk gongs, dinner gongs, classroom and theatre effects.
- 18" to 24" — the most versatile range. Enough body for orchestral work and sound baths without needing a large stand.
- 26" to 36" — deep fundamental, long sustain, serious presence. Concert halls, large sound healing practices, permanent installations.
- 54" — a rare instrument. Enormous fundamental and a wash that takes minutes to decay. One currently in stock, and it ships free.
